Cody Reilly started as goalie his sophomore year, something that is rare amongst rookies across the country. Currently he has a low goals against average of 3.17 goals per game, by the end of the season his goals against average could get between 2.5- 3.0 goals per game. Off the ice Cody is a down to earth person who is a kind, very approachable person. His off the ice presence as well as his strong leadership abilities are why he is the captain of the hockey team. In the video Cody discusses his passion, and his love for the sport of hockey. I also had the opportunity to interview Coach John Caulfield regarding Cody Reilly.
Before coming into the game, the Rowan’s Division 2 Hockey team defeated Mont Clair University with a 6-0 win. With the season already halfway underway the Prof’s looked to continue their undefeated streak at home alive against the West Chester Golden Rams.
No points were put onto the board not until the 2nd period of the game. It was Rowan who scored first; forward Sam Meyer via a power play. The goal was assisted by defenseman Matt Morelli and forward Alec Nicolai. The goal by Sam Meyer was his 12th goal of the year, giving him 18 points for the year, making the score 1-0 with 7: 56 minutes left in the 2nd period. Rowan would continue with their momentum into the 3rd period of the game, but not for long. The insurance goal was scored by forward Mike Mcgahey, and assisted by forward Alec Nicolai his second assist of the game. Making the score 2-0 Rowan with 19:14 minutes left in the 3rd period of the game, giving Rowan a little breathing room. The goal by Mike Mcgahey was his 14th goal of the year, giving him 27 points on the year. Forward Alec Nicolai leads the team with 20 assists, and 35 points for the year.
It’s a good thing that Mike Mcgahey scored the insurance goal early in the 3rd period, the Golden Ram’s went on a roll themselves. Forward Joseph Porreta of West Chester scores a goal via a power play. Making the score 2-1 with 18: 23 minutes left in the 3rd period. Just 12 seconds after making his first goal of the game Joe Porreta made his second goal of the game. Making the score 2-2 with 18: 11 minutes left in the 3rd period. Frustrating Rowan after dominating the first two periods.
The Golden Ram’s continued their scoring streak by taking lead with 14:42 left in the 3rd period forward Joe Moran scores. After surrendering three goals in the third period Rowan makes a substitution, and takes goalie Justin Natiello out in favor of Cody Reilly. The Prof’s though were not totally out of the game, and put a goal on the board before intermission finished. With 9:28 minutes left in the 3rd period defenseman Matt Morelli ties the game at 3-3, which gets the crowd at Hollydell pumped up. The goal is Morelli’s fifth goal of the season tying defenseman Peter Kaz with five goals a piece.
No one scores in the rest of the third period which takes the game into overtime. Even with the added time it wasn’t enough for anyone to score. The game then went into a shootout, and Rowan was able to pull away with the win. Defenseman Matt Morelli was the one who put the cherry on top to ensure the win for Rowan. At the end of the day Rowan’s record goes to 12-5 for the year, and they win both games of the weekend.
“Well we need to be a team that play’s 60 minutes, we can’t pick and choose how hard we are going to play against which opponents. We need to play 60 minutes solid the whole way out. There’s no way we can gage how hard we need to bring our game. It has to be 100% committed 100% of the time”, said head coach John Caulfield after the game.
